A friend of mine married a guy with bad credit and is now wondering what to do to go about establishing GOOD credit with this guy. She wants to buy a house in the near future but is afraid she will not be able to with his low credit score. Her credit score is excellent . How does she go about getting a high score for both of them so that she can get a good interest rate on a home loan or can she???Married a person with bad credit, so how do you establish good credit together?
Their credit files will be separate until they apply for and receive joint credit accounts.
One way for the husband to get good credit is to wait out his bad credit (24 months of no baddies) and/or negotiate pay for deletion agreements with creditors to whom he still owes money.
Another way would be to have the wife add the husband as an authorized user to her credit card...although the effectiveness of this strategy has been lessened in FICO 08.
A third strategy would be to have the wife and husband apply for a credit card jointly, albeit with a higher interest rate, and keep it current and properly utilized (under 35%). Doing this will increase the husband's score after a year.
I am sure there are other ways, but these would work.
One thing to consider, too, is that the wife may be able to buy the house on her own and just add the husband to the title later.
